Engagement Academy for University Leaders
Jun 10, 2008 - Jun 13, 2008,
The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center Roanoke, Virginia United States

In this time of unprecedented global economic competition, institutions of higher education must be relevant and responsive to critical societal issues. Politicians, companies, communities, non-profits, and individuals have called for an expanded role for higher education to partner with those outside its walls for mutual benefit.

Because of their responsibility to the public, higher educational institutions are uniquely positioned to engage with communities and spur innovation. During the last decade, higher education leaders have used the term "engagement" to describe a renewed relationship between higher education and the public it serves, and increasing numbers of funders, accreditation agencies, and classification systems treat public engagement as a measure of quality in higher education.

The Engagement Academy: Advancing Institutions, Developing Leaders, Realizing Results will:

1. develop a new generation of leaders for public engagement and outreach functions,
2. foster professional leadership skills to engage higher education institutions in the broader society
3. promote institutional outcomes related to discovery, learning and engagement.

Climate Information for Managing Risks (CIMR)
Jun 10, 2008 - Jun 13, 2008,
Tradewinds Island Grand Resort, St. Petersburg, Florida United States

Agricultural and natural resource managers need climate information to address short- and long-term challenges posed by variable and changing climate at the regional and local levels. Agricultural and natural resource managers need information on the combined impacts of climate variability, including extreme events, and climate change. Risks posed by climate variability would include hurricanes, drought, floods, freezes, heat stress, and wild fires. Risks posed by climate change, include changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme events, sea level rise, and agricultural emissions of greenhouse gases. In addition to risks, climate change offers new economic opportunities for agricultural and natural resource managers, such as bio-fuel production and carbon sequestration.

Because of the complex interplay between agricultural and natural resource vulnerabilities, risks, and opportunities, solutions will depend on integrated research, teaching, and extension programs, with decision-makers and other stakeholders included as partners in these programs. It is likely that we will need educational curricula, new research programs, and new communications tools to provide information that decision makers will need to manage risks and benefit from new opportunities.

Collaborating for growth
Jun 10, 2008 - Jun 10, 2008,
London, England, United Kingdom

Production excellence is now the minimum requirement for survival in manufacturing. Sustained success demands that companies create and deliver the right products, for the right markets, at the right time—in the face of accelerating and diversifying demand cycles.

The leading players are looking to collaborate beyond the production level, by working with their suppliers to innovate in both products and processes. But how can the talents and energies of suppliers be best harnessed to provide true innovation, differentiation and growth?

Economist Conferences has organised this exclusive dinner forum to explore the challenges and opportunities of innovation in the value chain. Developed from a wide-ranging Economist Intelligence Unit survey and in-depth interviews on innovation in manufacturing, the research findings raise several crucial topics for discussion, including:

* How prepared are today’s manufacturers for the emerging collaborative business environment?
* What are the main barriers to collaborating across the value chain?
* How can manufacturers overcome the silo approach to innovation across product, customer and supply chain operations?
* As collaboration becomes a necessity to achieve maximum growth, will any parts of the value chain remain off-limits to collaboration?
* What is the optimal collaborative strategy for your company?

Increasing return on equity
Jun 10, 2008 - Jun 10, 2008,
London, England, United Kingdom

An exclusive half-day forum for CFOs/senior finance executives and CEOs in the banking and insurance industries

The rise in recent years of hostile takeovers, private equity deals and activist hedge funds has led to an increasing scrutiny of companies’ capital structure and a preoccupation for senior executives on how to maximise return on equity. With so many tools and techniques available, however, how can decision-makers in the banking and insurance sector identify the most appropriate tools for their business? And how can companies ensure that their capital structure supports their strategy and future investments?

This invitation-only executive forum will feature exclusive insights and outcomes from businesses around the world, as revealed by new research carried out by the Economist Intelligence Unit and CFO and sponsored by RBS. Developed from a wide-ranging survey and in-depth interviews, the research findings raise several crucial issues that will be discussed, including:

* What can executives do to optimise the capital structure of their business?
* In what circumstances should companies alter their debt/equity ratio? When is a higher proportion of debt preferable, and when might higher proportions of equity be more sensible?
* What operational changes can be made to improve return on equity?
* What differences exist in capital structure for the banking and insurance sector in particular?

JatrophaWorld 2008 (Miami)
Jun 10, 2008 - Jun 11, 2008,
Hilton Miami Downtown, 1601 Biscayne Boulevard Miami, Florida United States

JATROPHAWORLD 2008 connects you with a network of knowledgeable practitioners and investors. Register early to guarantee your place.

Jatropha curcas, a lowly forest plant that originates from Central America and used widely in India as fence crop, has recently found itself in the limelight of global search for alternative Biodiesel feedstock.

It is a perennial plant with high oil-content that grows well on land not suitable for food crop, and could be an economic development engine in poor rural areas. It is highly advocated by its supporters because it is non-edible and does not compete in the food-chain.

Big plantations involving thousands and hundreds acres picked up steam in numerous countries, (US, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Costa Rica, Ghana, Ethiopia, Mozambique, China, India, Philippines, Indonesia to name a few) as they adopt the Jatropha system to subsidize their energy needs, or for community development.

But as with any new crop, comes unknowns. Even as it grows in arid lands and degraded soils, does it mean that fertilizer is not required to produce higher yields? How about water/irrigation system? Should we be concerned with pests and diseases?

Also as jatropha plantation scale up for commercial production, it is pertinent to find
new technology to address plant growth and
yield enhancements.

Following CMT’s 1st JATROPHAWORLD2008 conference in Indonesia last January, the Miami conference is where you want to be! JatrophaWorld is the MUST attend event if you are serious with Jatropha venture, register with you team now!

Applying Systems Biology-Abstraction
Jun 10, 2008 - Jun 11, 2008,
Fairmont Hotel San Francisco, California United States

To date, no single pharmacologic agent has been identified that can reverse the onset of human type 1 diabetes (T1D). Combinations of existing agents are promising treatment strategies; however the uncertainty of optimal dosing regimens can greatly reduce the efficiency of laboratory studies. The collaborative research between the ADA/Entelos Diabetes Research Center (DRC) and Dr. Matthias von Herrath’s lab at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology (LIAI) used a combined in silico/laboratory approach to identify optimal combination therapies to reverse diabetes onset in non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice. Using the T1D PhysioLab® platform, a large-scale mathematical model of T1D pathogenesis in the NOD mouse, variations in dosing and timing were simulated to identify treatment protocols that maximize the likelihood of observing diabetes reversal in the laboratory. The simulation results predicted optimal dosing regimens for oral insulin/anti-CD3 and oral insulin/exendin-4 combination therapies. By conducting laboratory experiments directly informed by in silico simulations, LIAI has been able to optimize its research design and expedite the discovery of type 1 diabetes therapeutics.

Recombinant AAV vectors expressing shRNAs have been shown to be effective in reducing hepatitis B viral replication in a transgenic mouse model. Interestingly, over expression of shRNAs can be toxic and even lethal because it interferes with normal mi-croRNA processing. The rate-limiting steps in mammalian tissues as well as effective strategies to maintain a high therapeutic index will be discussed.
