Cyclic Nucleotide Phosphodiesterases 2008
Jun 8, 2008 - Jun 13, 2008,
Il Ciocco, Lucca, Toscana Italy

Cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP regulate a vast array of cellular activity by modulating the function of molecular switches in the cell. The Cyclic Nucleotide Phosphodiesterases (PDEs) function as key players in controlling the duration and magnitude of these cellular responses by reducing the intracellular levels of cAMP and cGMP. The level of complexity of this role is reflected by the increasingly recognized fact that different PDEs are able to exert control of compartmentalised pools of cAMP and cGMP. The 2008 meeting is the sixth Cyclic Nucleotide Phosphodiesterases Gordon Research Conference and addresses ground breaking developments in the field. Fundamental research into the structure/function (derived from X-ray crystallography) of PDEs and regulation and compartmentalisation in mammalian cells and lower organisms will be discussed. A major theme of the meeting is how these fundamental studies inform on the role of PDEs in systems biology, with particular focus on the central nervous and cardiovascular systems. This is complemented by thorough examination of therapeutic utilities of PDE inhibitors, which is now timely given the commercial success of PDE5 inhibitors. In this regard, the conference includes discussion of the role of different PDEs and the therapeutic utility of inhibitors in cardiovascular disease, schizophrenia, mood disorders and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer disease. The meeting provides an important and needed opportunity to review the most recent developments in the field and aims to inform on the direction of research in this area for the next two years.

Speakers will include leading scientists from the US, Japan and Europe, as well as young scientists who have recently reported exciting findings.

The 2008 conference is framed around five Specific Aims:

1. To bring together national and international leaders in EED research in a meeting format that promotes learning and open discussion of hypotheses and knowledge gaps and that encourages collaborative research;
2. To highlight the important milestones in EED research since the first GRC on EED in 1998, emphasizing new developments that may guide research in this area over the next ten years;
3. To focus on effects of EED across the lifespan (prenatal, early childhood, puberty, midlife and old age) in a range of model systems;
4. To highlight novel mechanisms, new endpoints and new environmental agents currently being investigated as potential EEDs, and to expand EED exposure assessment;
5. To encourage participation of trainees and other young scientists in EED research.

Biopolymers 2008
Jun 8, 2008 - Jun 13, 2008,
Salve Regina University, Newport, Rhode Island United States

Biopolymers (proteins, RNA, DNA) are central to most biological processes, including those relevant to human health such as signaling pathways, metabolism, and gene expression. They are implicated in many human diseases, are usually targets of therapeutic drugs and are becoming increasingly used as therapeutic agents themselves. The 2008 Biopolymers GRC will explore recent advances and future trends in understanding the structure, stability, dynamics, and interactions of biopolymers, as well as the impact of these fundamental physico-chemical properties on cellular processes. Biopolymers GRC is uniquely poised to foster multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary connections between chemistry, chemical engineering, physics and biology. This meeting of scientists working in the areas of experimental and theoretical understanding of biopolymers allows the results and ideas to be exchanged, compared, discussed, and synthesized.

Iron-Sulfur Enzymes 2008
Jun 8, 2008 - Jun 13, 2008,
Colby-Sawyer College, New London, New Hampshire United States

Iron-sulfur proteins are among the most common and ancient enzymes and electron-transfer agents in nature. They play key roles in photosynthesis, respiration, and the metabolism of small molecules such as H2, CO, and N2. The Iron Sulfur Enzyme Gordon Research Conference evolved from an earlier GRC on Nitrogen Fixation that began in 1994. The scope of the current meeting has broadened to include all enzymes or metalloproteins in which Fe-S bonds play a key role. This year's meeting will focus on the biosynthesis of Fe-S clusters, as well as the structure and mechanism of key Fe-S enzymes such as hydrogenase, nitrogenase and its homologues, radical SAM enzymes, and aconitase-related enzymes. Recent progress on the role of Fe-S enzymes in health, disease, DNA/RNA-processing, and alternative bio-energy systems will also be highlighted. This conference will assemble a broad, diverse, and international group of biologists and chemists who are investigating fundamental issues related to Fe-S enzymes, on atomic, molecular, organism, and environmental scales.

The topics to be addressed will include:

* Biosynthesis & Genomics of Fe-S Enzymes
* Fundamental Fe-S Chemistry
* Hydrogen and Fe-S Enzymes
* Nitrogenase & Homologous Fe-S Enzymes
* Fe-S Enzymes in Health & Disease
* Radical SAM and Aconitase-Related Fe-S Enzymes
* Fe-S Enzymes and Synthetic Analogues in BioEnergy
* Fe-S Enzymes in Geochemistry and the Origin of Life

2008 ASLO Summer Meeting
Jun 8, 2008 - Jun 13, 2008,
Delta Hotel, Saint Johns, Newfoundland Canada

The theme of the meeting reflects the history, geographical location and geomorphology of our host town. This meeting is about interactions; between scientists of course, and also between disciplines and approaches, between ecosystems and environments - freshwater and marine. Standing at the easternmost edge of North America, oceans lakes and rivers define the landscape and shape the people and their interactions with the world. Water and fish brought the first Newfoundlanders here and still define their identity. Our visit to St. John's will be a great opportunity to explore linkages between limnology, oceanography and fisheries. We will also highlight cold-water ecosystems. What better place than Newfoundland at the time of year when icebergs dot the coast? Finally, we cannot come to Newfoundland without thinking about our past and revisiting our roots. Ancestors and history are alive in the collective memory here, and we will take time to reflect on the progress and directions of our discipline in the 25 years since ASLO last met in St. John's. Plenary lectures will be held Monday through Friday. Poster and oral sessions will be held throughout the meeting.

2nd International Conference on Osteoimmunology:Interactions of the Immune and Skeletal Systems
Jun 8, 2008 - Jun 13, 2008,
Aldemar Paradise Village Crete, Greece

It has only recently been appreciated that the immune and skeletal systems have major interactions. It is now well documented that osteoclasts, which are important cellular mediators of skeletal homeostasis, are derived from hematopoietic precursors that also give rise to immune cells. In addition, numerous cytokines that were first shown to regulate immune cell function have also been demonstrated to regulate bone cells and influence skeletal health. Conversely, products of bone cells appear critical for the engraftment of marrow in bone, the normal development of the hematopoietic and immune systems and provide niche for long-term memory B and T cells. In the past scientists involved in immune and bone cell investigations have rarely interacted in a significant way as these disciplines have developed independently and, for the most part, remain separate. The conference will bring together leading international scientists from both fields to interact so that new collaboration can develop and more rapid progress in understanding the relationships between these fields can be achieved. Short talks will be selected from abstracts from the international community. This conference will have a format to provide an environment of maximum interaction and interchange through lectures, posters, and open discussion.
