Small Group Meeting on Dehumanization: Determinants and Consequences of Perceiving Others as Less Than Humans
Jun 6, 2008 - Jun 9, 2008,
Kazimierz Dolny, Poland

Interest in the joint and socially shared nature of individuals' perceptions and representations has soared in experimental social psychology (e.g.; Hardin & Higgins, 1996) and other related fields, such as memory (Gabbert, Memon, & Allan, In recent years, research concerning various forms of dehumanization (e.g., infra-humanization, mechanistic dehumanization, moral exclusion) has flourished. Publications, presentations and posters at the Würzburg EAESP general meeting, several symposia at SESP annual meeting, at SPSP General Conference and Pre-conference, and a soon-to appear special issue of Social Cognition are all events that witness the centrality of this topic in social psychology research.
The process of dehumanization, and its links to intergroup violence, has attracted the interest of psychologists and social scientists in general for decades. However, with few exceptions, its discussion has mostly been theoretical or characterized by the consideration of limited and anecdotal empirical evidence. On the contrary, the new interest innovates by a more systematic effort to test experimentally the hypotheses deriving from various theoretical models and to develop measures of dehumanization. Its detection mobilizes techniques as diverse as content analyses, questionnaires, implicit measures, or neuro-imaging. In other words, research on dehumanization is now akin to, although it greatly expands upon, traditional research in stereotyping, prejudice, and intergroup bias.
Dehumanization is a complex process. It takes different forms in strong, protracted conflicts than in milder ones. 2003; Hirst & Manier, 2002), cognition (Barsalou, 2003; Smith & Semin, 2004), psycholinguistics (Pickering & Garrod, 2004), communication (Higgins & Semin, 2001), and social neuroscience (e.g., Gallese, Keysers, & Rizzolatti, 2003).

Australian Songwriters Conference
Jun 6, 2008 - Jun 9, 2008,
Ettalong Bach Club & Mantra Resort Central Coast, New South Wales Australia

Songwriters from across the country will converge on Sydney in June 2008 for the first annual Australian Songwriters Conference, and with attendance spots strictly limited, organisers expect the event to sell out quickly.

The ASC is a four day event, being held Friday 6th to Monday 9th June 2008, taking advantage of the Queen's Birthday long weekend. The conference will take place at the Ettalong Beach Club and Mantra Resort, in the beautiful seaside resort village of Ettalong on the NSW Central Coast, about an hour north of Sydney.

Although week-long songwriting camps and conferences are regularly held overseas, particularly in the USA, there has never been a conference of this scope, especially for songwriters, held in Australia.

The Australian Songwriters Conference will deal specifically and exclusively with the craft and business of songwriting.

The ASC is unique in that it is open to all songwriters, regardless of age, location, songwriting experience or genre. Songwriters do not need to be members of existing organisations, and the conference agenda is packed full of seminars, workshops and other activities relevant to both performing and non-performing songwriters.

The ASC is excited to confirm that our Keynote Speaker and main seminar facilitator will be top US songwriter, author and teacher, JASON BLUME (Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, Jesse McCartney, Collin Raye, the Oak Ridge Boys and John Berry). He is one of the few songwriters to ever achieve the distinction of having his songs on Billboard’s Pop, R&B, and Country charts all at the same time, and his songs are included on albums that have sold more than 50 million copies! One of the USA's most respected songwriting teachers, when he is not writing hits, Blume teaches others how to do so.

The conference agenda includes seminars run by Jason Blume on a variety of subjects such as ‘Using Successful Song Structures and Rhymes’, ‘Writing Melodies Listeners Can’t Forget – and Artists Want to Record’, ‘Producing Demos that Demonstrate Your Song’s Hit Potential’, ‘This Business of Songwriting (A Discussion of Publishing; Royalties; Pitching Songs, and More)’ and ‘Pitching/Placing Songs in International Markets’. A selection of top Australian songwriters in the major genres will also give talks on writing for the local market. There will be a group songwriting workshop, informal Q&A sessions, and nightly open mics and jam sessions. Representatives from major and indie music publishing companies will conduct song pitch/critique sessions and attendees will have virtually unlimited opportunities to mix and chat with the industry Pros over the course of the conference.

The ASC is committed to bringing in Australia’s top music industry professionals to run seminars relevant to songwriters and the Australian music industry, including top songwriters, producers, publishers, music lawyers and representatives from all the major Australian songwriting organisations. We have already received commitments from a number of Australia’s top songwriters, publishers and music organisations who will attend as speakers or mentors to share their knowledge and advice with attendees during the conference.

There are ‘special extras’ for Early Bird sign-ups to the conference, including one-on-one critique sessions by Jason Blume, so don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to take your songwriting to the next level. There are limited spots available so book early to avoid disappointment.

38th annual Meeting of the Jean Piaget Society
Jun 6, 2008 - Jun 8, 2008,
Loews Le Concorde Hotel, Quebec, Quebec Canada

Our understanding of adolescent biological, cognitive, moral, and social development has been significantly revised over the past decade. The view of adolescence as the culmination of progressive, qualitative, and developmental changes has given way to the view that adolescence is a period of vulnerability and instability entailing developmental continuity from childhood and to adulthood. However, the current views may obscure what makes adolescence a unique period in the life cycle. One of the major goals of the JPS meeting in 2008 is to explore the distinctiveness of adolescence
from a constructivist and developmental perspective.

The JPS meeting will address adolescence as a unique time of opportunity and vulnerability, as adolescents actively coordinate capacities, skills, and understandings within and across domains. The symposium will examine these issues from neurological, cognitive, self-system, moral, and social perspectives. Interrelationships across these areas will be considered, and associations between these developmental processes and adolescents’ vulnerabilities to psychosocial problems and difficulties will be examined.

1st Workshop Earth Observation From Research to Teaching in Schools and Universities
Jun 6, 2008 - Jun 6, 2008,
ITU Conference Hall Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Marmara, Turkey

You are cordially invited to attend the first workshop of the Special Interest Group on Education and Training of the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories, to be held at the Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Turkey, on 6 June 2008. The workshop aims to make the results obtained at the more than 250 EARSeL member institutes available to the public. Remote sensing of the earth covers many topics that are significant for all natural science disciplines in school and university curricula. Satellite imagery and data derived from satellite sensors are available from studies of local or regional phenomena. This covers larger scales, as it is typical for remote sensing using satellites, but also the region around schools, and allows thus to point out the dependence between local and global scales. Remote sensing data are used to explain actual conditions on earth. But they also allow to outline the methods for predicting future developments – e.g. of the climate system – with models.

At the Mellen Center, we are committed to thinking regionally and nationally about the care of our patients.

This afternoon and evening program is focused on bringing the Mellen Center staff together with our regional partners in care. The general session will examine the differential diagnosis of MS, initial treatment, and review special topics in MS such as pregnancy counseling.

We will discuss as a group creating a regional network dedicated to improving care for this special population. Small group sessions will focus on the management of the bowel and bladder, symptom management, rehabilitation, and complex cases. There will be ample time for discussion and questions.

In addition, there will be time to get to know members of the Mellen Center staff and for the staff to get to know you. We will use the audience response system to enhance the experience and help us learn more about your opinions.
