Jun 1, 2008 - Jun 6, 2008,
Colby-Sawyer College, New London, New Hampshire United StatesThe Molecular Cell Biology Gordon Conference is focused on the most exciting research discoveries in cell biology. Unlike most specialty meetings, this conference is a unique opportunity to gain a broad view of cell biology and to interact with leaders in their respective fields. To encourage the presentation of new results, we have set aside time for short oral presentations. Junior independent investigators, post-doctoral fellows and students are especially encouraged to attend and request short talks. We aim to promote discussion among participants, and will ask all attendees who are not giving a talk to also present a poster.
The goal of the meeting is to provide insight into the most current molecular models that govern the structural organization and dynamics of cells and organisms. - full details
- NOX Family NADPH Oxidases 2008
-
Jun 1, 2008 - Jun 6, 2008,
Colby-Sawyer College, New London, New Hampshire United StatesReactive oxygen species (ROS) figure prominently in a broad array of biological contexts, including antimicrobial activity, signal transduction, vascular tone, oxygen sensing, endothelial cell function, cell growth and differentiation, fibrosis and tissue remodeling, wound healing, carcinogenesis, thyroid hormone synthesis, vestibular function, plant innate immunity, microbial differentiation, and a host of post-translational changes in biomolecules. The NADPH oxidase (Nox) proteins, a recently identified family of homologues structurally related to gp91phox in phagocytes, provide the non-mitochondrial ROS that contribute to many physiologic functions as well as participate in significant plant and animal pathophysiology. This meeting will examine the structure, cellular and tissue distribution, biochemistry, regulation, and physiology of the members of the Nox protein family. Included in the meeting's purview are the contributions of Nox proteins to the biology of unicellular organisms, plants, and animals, with a strong emphasis on the latter. Sessions encompass ongoing work in specific organ systems (cardiovascular, neurologic, pulmonary, immunologic, and endocrine), plant as well as non mammalian animal biology, fundamental aspects of oxidant-dependent cell signaling and beyond! The program will also include: (1) late-breaking work that surfaces just prior to the meeting and (2) shorter presentations selected from the abstracts submitted by attendees as part of the application process. Effort will be made in this way to highlight and to promote the ongoing work of younger scientists in the field.

- Migration, Diaspora, Ethnicity, and Nationalism in History
-
Jun 1, 2008 - Jun 30, 2008,
Baltimore, Maryland United StatesThe relentless thrust of globalization and the unexpected termination of the Cold War have increased rather than reduced global tensions. These developments force us to reconsider some themes once thought to be exhausted. Migrations, the formation of diaspora communities, and the resurgence of ethnicities, both old and new, have transformed nationalisms and conventional conceptions of the nation-state. With such considerations in mind, the Historical Society is pleased to announce that the organizing theme for its 6th conference, scheduled for early June 2008, will be “Migration, Diaspora, Ethnicity, and Nationalism in History.” The conference will be held in Baltimore, Maryland. We envision a meeting in which historians across fields come together to deepen and enrich the state of knowledge about these vital concerns.

Hynes Convention Center Boston, Massachusetts United StatesScaling of semiconductor devices has continued unabated for the past three decades, and will likely continue for the near future. However, at the end of this decade (ca. 2011), the nature of the silicon device is such that many alternative approaches are likely to be viable contenders.
Electronic, photonic and communication device opportunities are emerging, but require coordinated industrial efforts to realize their potential. Already, new materials (SOI, SiGe, strained Si) are used in current production, high-k dielectrics, fully metallic gates and more non-(Si, SiO2) are expected in the coming generations. In addition, low dimension structures such as Fin-FETS are being considered.
Yet, the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors does not identify logic devices beyond CMOS, which presents a unique opportunity for the research community to influence the future of technology. Consequently, this symposium will address the role of several prospective technologies in creating new device options in the post-2011 era (sub-10 nm equivalent technologies). It will provide a forum for the presentation of new designs, processes, devices, architectures, and characterization at the nanoscale. Content will be mindful of the rigors of the existing roadmaps and their associated infrastructure, but will also explore extensions to the roadmap in alignment with industry, SIA and governmental initiatives. - full details
