On behalf of the European Society of Pathology, in collaboration with the Sociedad Latinoamericana de Patología and the Organizing Committee, we warmly invite you to take part in the 3rd INTERCONTINENTAL CONGRESS OF PATHOLOGY to be held in Barcelona in 2008, from May 17-22.
It is evident that science is at an age of impressive advances. As a consequence, changes are taking place rapidly in pathology. In this meeting we would like to actively involve the working groups and the committees in order to offer an interesting scientific programme with one main goal: LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE. To achieve this objective, the congress will consist of keynote lectures and large symposiums covering new scientific and technological advances in the different fields of our speciality. We also plan to schedule slide seminars and short courses focused on the practical aspects of pathology. We will try to involve well-known senior experts in the different fields, as well as young investigators with expertise in the application of new techniques to diagnostic pathology and research. We also plan to include free papers and poster sessions to allow young pathologists to share their recent research. PCA:Basic Teaching Principles & Techniques
May 17, 2008 - May 17, 2008,
Choa Chu Kang Polyclinic ,Primary Care Academy Learning Centre Singapore

On completion of medical training most doctors are on apprenticeship based training schemes where the transmission of knowledge and clinical skills is based on the principle of, ‘learn one, see one and do one”. However, with greater accountability and greater societal and regulatory expectation of doctors, with the advent of an increasingly litigious climate in many developed countries, it becomes imperative that medical officers and trainees doctors undergo a more robust outcome or competency based training. This would require greater planning and commitment on the part of trainers to ensure the outcome is achieved. Outcome based training implies setting clear goals at the outset before commencement of training and ensuring the trainees develop these competencies at the end of training. Hence trainers need to be equipped with the understanding and skills to deliver such training. Although it is an accepted norm, but one cannot always assume that the senior Doctor or Consultant who has numerous responsibilities on his/her plate is equally equipped to teach and transmit his/her area of expertise to a more junior doctor. Not all experts may be, ‘born to teach.’ although we have encountered role models in the past who seemed to have a natural flair for teaching and training. For the majority of good doctors, some form of guidance on how to teach/train effectively would come in handy.

The aim of this workshop is to equip trainers or doctors who have teaching duties, with an overview of the developments in medical education as well as the basic knowledge, skills and tools that may enable them to understand their learners, optimize delivery of training and hopefully, ensure a more optimum end-goal of training.
