Controversies and Evidence for Tracheostomies in Critical Care

This conference aims to look critically at the issues concerning tracheostomy in the setting of critically ill patients, and in particular, to address areas in which there is continuing controversy about best practice.
Following review of basic anatomy and physiology, and the techniques of surgical and percutaneous trachoestomy, there will be consideration of management of the critical airway, and examination of some of the controversies in management. Finally, the problems associated with long term care and removal of tracheostomies will be discussed. Throughout the meeting, there will be an emphasis on an evidence based approach to analysis of the problems discussed.
