Reduction and the Special Sciences
Apr 10, 2008 - Apr 12, 2008,
Center for Logic and Philosophy of Science, Tilburg University, 5000 LE Tilburg, Noord Brabant Netherlands

Science presents us with a variety of accounts of the world. While some of these accounts posit a deeper theoretical structure and fundamental entities, others do not. But which of these accounts is the right one? How should science conceptualize the world? And what is the relation between the various accounts? Opinions on these issues diverge wildly in philosophy of science. At one extreme are reductionists who argue that higher-level theories should, in principle, be incorporated in or eliminated by the basic level theory. Higher-level theories do not ultimately exhibit conceptual integrity or provide genuine explanations. At the other extreme are pluralists who take higher levels of description and explanation seriously and argue for their independence and indispensability. Our goal in this conference is to bring together representatives from as many viewpoints as possible in order to advance our understanding of this problem. We invite case studies from the natural, social and behavioural sciences as well as discussions of philosophical models of intertheoretic relations.

Movenpick Hotel, Istanbul, Marmara, Turkey

Turkey is set for massive levels of project financing in the energy and transportation sectors from 2008 onwards to rejuvenate ageing infrastructure and to develop new and exciting projects. The State of Turkey has identified private sector investment in these projects as the way forward, through Public Private Partnerships (PPPs), as well as infrastructure and project financing. The privatisation of motorways, toll roads and bridges has begun in Turkey, with
projects that have attracted much domestic and international interest. Billions of dollars are set to be poured into port and airport privatisation deals, as well as new rail and metro projects across the country.

Turkey is also facing a crippling electricity shortage set to take effect as early as 2008 and massive efforts are being made by the government to promote private sector development of Greenfield and Brownfield power plant projects, as well as exploring alternative sources of energy as a way of meeting this shortfall.

In this context, Euromoney Seminars and Project Finance Magazine are proud to present the inaugural Project and Infrastructure Finance in Turkey to take place in Istanbul.

ISN Forefronts Symposium on Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)
Apr 10, 2008 - Apr 13, 2008,
Montreal, Quebec Canada

Polycystic kidney diseases and related disorder provide a surprisingly broad window on a rich array of biological processes, ranging from organ development and structure through cellular physiology and molecular signaling. The polycystic diseases have provided exciting new perspectives on the roles of cellular components such as cilia and basal bodies, as well as novel insights into the physiology of TRP channels, signaling pathways including Wnt and mTOR, and the mechanisms through which cells develop planar polarity.

This symposium will bring together investigators from diverse fields who will contribute their respective areas of expertise to the development of a comprehensive understanding of human diseases affecting organ structure and function. The diseases covered include polycystic kidney disease, Bardet-Biedl syndrome, nephronophthisis and tuberous sclerosis complex.

In producing the program, we have attempted to bring together individuals who focus on cystic disease with researchers who study allied molecules and pathways. By convening and intermingling research scientists, nephrologists and clinicians, and by welcoming experts from related specialties, this Forefronts Symposium will achieve the bench to bedside scope and spirit that embody the ISN Forefronts Symposia.

EuroGynPath 2008 Conference
Apr 10, 2008 - Apr 12, 2008,
University of Medicine and Pharmacy Tîrgu Mureș, Mures Romania

The cervical carcinoma is the main cause of deaths among the female population in Romania and it ranks as the second after the breast cancer. This fact is due to numerous factors among which the inefficiency of applying a national programme of vaginal screening, the absence of a national screening registry, the incomplete training of the personnel involved and the absence of correlation of the national standards with the vaginal screening system and the monitoring of the cervical carcinoma in the European Union.

The course is intended for residents and specialists in pathology, obstetric gynecology, epidemiology, and oncology. Apart from the training course, a workshop and a symposium will be organised, dedicated to the same topic. This will take place at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Tîrgu Mureș, founded in 1948, which, from a methodological and practical top medical assistance in the area, is a pivot.
