Waste Summit 2008
Mar 19, 2008 - Mar 19, 2008,
Royal College of Surgeons, London, England, United Kingdom

As the links between waste, resources, climate change and energy come into sharper focus, continuing with “business as usual” is no longer an option. The Government’s revised Waste Strategy 2007 reflects the fundamental need for ‘joined-up’ thinking and a holistic approach to waste management. The recognition that waste is a valuable commodity is beginning to influence strategies for resource efficiency and recovery, and to underpin moves to exploit synergies across waste streams. Less certain is how we can translate these bold political statements into reality.

Materials Recycling Week and New Civil Engineer have joined forces to present the Waste Summit 2008. This event is the ideal forum for those responsible for waste treatment and disposal to meet the engineers and contractors who will build vital infrastructure, and for the construction industry to secure the support it requires from waste management consultants and contractors.

Streamed to ensure your conference experience fits your business needs, the Waste Summit will cover both construction waste and the delivery of essential waste infrastructure, and will provide a snapshot of the full range of stakeholder perspectives.

43rd John Player Lecture: Getting the Best out of Britain’s Nuclear Workhorses
Mar 19, 2008 - Mar 19, 2008,
Institute of Mechanical Engineers. London, England, United Kingdom

British Energy owns and operates eight nuclear power stations. Between them they produce approximately 20% of the UK’s electricity and, over their lifetime, have avoided the production of around 800 million tons of CO2.
The AGR design is unique to the UK and a considerable amount of development work has been required over the years to underpin safe, reliable, operation.

This paper outlines a brief history of nuclear power in the UK, highlights some of the challenges which have been encountered along the way, and gives examples of the significant improvements in performance of the nuclear fleet over recent years.

It concludes by looking at the likely demand for electricity in the future and the role nuclear generation can play in meeting this national need.
