The government’s annual education and training budget for 2006 is SR87.3 billion (US$23.28 billion), a staggering SR18 billion (US$4.8 billion) increase on the previous year.
The Government is proud of the astounding transformation of its educational system, from a mere 226 schools and 29,887 students in 1951, to 3283 schools and 550,000 students in 1970. Today there are in excess of 26,000 schools with over 5 million students. The 2006 budget includes the building of 2,673 new schools (in addition to over 3,000 currently under construction) and the renovation and equipping of 2,000 schools complete with new furniture, equipment, laboratories and computers.
Education and training are a high priority for the Kingdom; the growing population is placing a severe burden on the state run education system, whilst the push toward 'Saudisation', the employment of Saudis as opposed to foreign nationals, and a strong economy is increasingly demanding a well-educated and trained workforce. - full details

Many multipurpose schemes will provide water supply, irrigation and recreational benefits for the population.
•Nearly 700 million people in the Asia-Pacific region still have no access to safe drinking water, and the region suffers a hugely disproportionate level of water-related disasters (which caused about 62,000 deaths per year between 2001 and 2005).

- Hedge Fund Replication and Alternative Beta
-
Mar 10, 2008 - Mar 12, 2008,
Russell Hotel, London, England, United KingdomThe hedge fund industry is slowly beginning to acknowledge that a large part of its returns comes not from alpha, but from “alternative beta” factors – systematic exposures to a diverse array of fundamental risk premia including credit risk, volatility risk, the small company effect, and so on.
One of the key implications of “alternative beta” theory is that it is possible to create “synthetic hedge funds”, which replicate the alternative beta exposures of the hedge fund universe. The aim of these funds is to generate hedge fund-like returns without hedge fund fees. Prior to our first event, in February 2007, only three companies had launched products of this kind. In the months since then, at least a dozen companies – banks or fund managers - have launched either hedge fund trackers, or “alternative beta” products (offering an “optimised” exposure to alternative beta risk premia).
These recent developments mirror those which took place in the traditional fund management industry, some 20 years ago, when indexed tracker funds were introduced. The initial take-up was slow, but in time these mechanistic funds, with their lower fees, gained a significant market share. Will hedge funds now also follow the path of passive investing? The technology is far more complex, but the major players believe it can be done. Clearly, the stakes are huge! - full details
