4th Annual Conference of F.O. Licht's Sugar and Ethanol Brazil
Mar 4, 2008 - Mar 6, 2008,
Rennaissance Hotel, São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil

No other country matches Brazil in its potential for expansion and low cost of production, and it is very likely that Brazil will maintain its dominance of the world‘s sugar and ethanol markets in the foreseeable future. Given the world's rising dependency on sugarcane products from Brazil and its flexibility in the production of either sugar or ethanol, it has become one of the major determinants of world market prices. In 2007/08 more than 55% of the cane crop was processed into ethanol, the highest level in the new millennium. For the first time for several years sugar production fell as a consquence of a strong domestic ethanol market, but this is likely to change in 2008/09. The demise of the European Union as a major exporter of white sugar and the expected downturn in production in India will lead to new opportunities for Brazil.

Fusion – powering the World’s future
Mar 4, 2008 - Mar 4, 2008,
Thom Building (University of Oxford) Oxford, Oxfordshire United Kingdom

With fossil fuel reserves dwindling and environmental concerns over the emission of greenhouse gases, the search for alternative energy sources is becoming a prominent social issue of global importance.

A world-wide research programme is studying the viability of nuclear fusion - the process that powers the Sun - as a future energy source.

The world’s largest magnetic confinement fusion experiment and European flagship facility, the JET device, has been operating at the Culham Science Centre in Oxfordshire for nearly 25 years and has successfully demonstrated the controlled fusion of deuterium and tritium nuclei, producing some 16MW from fusion reactions.

Work on JET and other devices around the world has helped to design ITER – an international machine that will produce 500MW of fusion power and act as a single stepping stone towards the demonstration of electricity production from fusion.

Fusion power offers an almost limitless supply of energy with no greenhouse gas emission and no long-lived radioactivity compared to fission.

The physics principles and latest developments in magnetic fusion will be discussed, together with technological and key engineering challenges that remain to be overcome in order to make fusion energy a reality within our lifetimes!
