- Semantic Representation of Spoken Language (SRSL7)
-
Dec 11, 2007 - Dec 13, 2007,
Barcelona Center, Salamanca, Castile and Leon SpainThe aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers interested in the semantic representation of spoken corpora, especially spontaneous speech. The current state-of-the-art supports solutions from very different backgrounds and perspectives, but still remain important and complex issues to deal with, such as the accurate segmentation of speech in semantic units.
Spoken language is a pending issue in computational linguistics and artificial intelligence, both traditionally focused on written language, although semantic processing of speech is necessary for the understanding of both natural and human-machine interaction. The problems found when trying to linguistically structure spontaneous speech are leading to works focused on its semantic representation. In-depth research on the semantic representation of speech can provide us with a suitable basis for further analysis of related linguistic levels, like prosody or pragmatics. - full details

Dec 11, 2007 - Dec 15, 2007,
Las Vegas, Nevada United StatesACTE is proud to bring Ruby Payne to Las Vegas to share her insight on working with students in poverty. Payne has been involved with education as a teacher, principal, consultant and administrator, and is working to spread the word throughout North America that children of poverty need not suffer through an educational system oblivious to their needs. Her year’s educating and research lead to her first book, A Framework for Understanding Poverty.
A gifted synthesizer, Payne presents her research and observations in such a way that many people experience "eye-opening learning," enhancing their own abilities to help children of poverty succeed. This is sure to be an interesting and thought-provoking session, one sure to get you thinking.
For anyone facing a challenge, ACTE’s Closing General Session speaker should help you overcome that challenge and succeed in ways you can’t yet imagine. A former middle school teacher and wrestling coach, Weihenmayer is one of the most exciting and well-known athletes in the world. Despite losing his vision at the age of 13, Weihenmayer has become an accomplished mountain climber, paraglider, and skier, who has never let his blindness interfere with his passion for an exhilarating and fulfilling life.

- An Informed Discussion of Nontraditional Mortgage Products & Escalating Foreclosures
-
Dec 11, 2007 - Dec 12, 2007,

"Nontraditional," "alternative," or "exotic" mortgage products are residential loans that include "interest-only" and "payment option" adjustable-rate mortgages that allow borrowers to defer repayment of principal and sometimes interest. These products allow borrowers to exchange lower payments during an initial period for higher payments later. The conference also seeks to build a grassroots coalition to build an effective community response to address the rising tide of Wisconsin foreclosures, which rocketed 34% in the state last year and have jumped another 21% thus far in 2007.

- Communicating in Times of Change
-
Dec 11, 2007 - Dec 12, 2007,
Sydney, New South Wales AustraliaIt is a typical human instinct to resist change and the threat it poses to the status quo. When an organisation is faced with a time of change it is therefore understandable that employees and stakeholders alike will receive news of the transition with a certain amount of concern over how it will impact organisational culture and day to day operations.
Your task as a communicator is to act as a change catalyst by maintaining open lines of communication and engaging relevant individuals, business units and external parties throughout the process. It is necessary to manage people and perceptions, and understand how change affects people, so that you can tailor your strategies to suit your organisation’s particular situation.
To ensure that change is accepted and embraced, you need to ensure that you identify and deal with any associated barriers, and also define the processes and channels that will support the change. It is also wise to develop champions who can assist in guiding the organisation through its evolution, no matter how big or small.
This two-day interactive masterclass will provide opportunities to engage with the masterclass leader and other attendees to really define how you can take a more strategic approach towards change communication. You will take part in interactive activities and discussions and leave this masterclass enthused and equipped with new strategies and ideas to implement in your workplace.
