In response to current calls to dramatically reduce the CO2 and NOx emissions of motor vehicles and in the face of rising fuel prices, the automotive industry is striving to develop and launch new drive concepts. The key parameters in this context are combustion, downsizing (e.g. the reduction of friction) and the after-treatment of exhaust gases. In addition to the optimisation of conventional drive systems, hybrid drives which are being developed to combine conventional and electric drive systems have a key role to play. The large-scale avoidance of no-load losses (e.g. start / stop operation) and partial reclaiming of braking energy can significantly contribute to these economies.
