Mitochondrial Dynamics and Physiology

Mar 22, 2009 - Mar 27, 2009
TELUS Whistler Conference Centre Whistler, British Columbia Canada

Highlights

The view of mitochondria as dynamic organelles that are continuously remodeled by fission, fusion and transport has finally become mainstream. Research reveals that these processes impact mitochondrial function in healthy and apoptotic cells and cause inherited neuropathies in humans when disturbed. Progress has been made in identifying the molecular machineries that carry out these events and the signaling pathways that integrate mitochondrial behavior with cell physiology. The current challenge for researchers and clinicians is to incorporate these findings into testable models for the etiology of mitochondrial diseases. The goal of this meeting is to bring together international leaders in basic and clinical research to discuss new and exciting findings and the best strategies for applying this information in the laboratory and the clinic. By including workshops and short talks chosen from abstracts, the program will showcase late-breaking “hot” topics, provide a forum to critically evaluate current controversies, and will be of interest to scientists interested in basic mechanisms of organelle biology as well as clinicians interested in mitochondrial pathology. Opportunities for interdisciplinary interactions will be further enhanced by the concurrent meeting “Cell Death Pathways”, which will share a Keynote and two plenary sessions with this meeting.
