Flat Panel Displays (FPD) are thinner and lighter than Braun cathode ray tubes (CRT) traditionally used in TVs and computer monitors. The many types of FPD technologies include LCD, PDP, OLED, LED, FED, SED, ELD, DLP, VFD and FD. Asia is at the forefront of this display revolution. Korea , Japan and Taiwan are the primary production centers for LCDs while Korea and Japan are the leaders in PDP technology. Korea is also on the cutting edge of developments in OLED and FED technology; Korean electronics giants Samsung and LG have a near monopoly on thin CRTs. Flexible electronic displays (electronic paper), FED and 3-dimensional displays are on the next wave of technology development and rapidly approaching commercialization.
