The German Association of Applied Linguistcs (GAL e.V.) in co-operation with the University Duisburg-Essen and Congress Center Essen (CCE) is proud to host AILA 2008 — The 15th World Congress of Applied Linguistics.

Europe is encouraging multilingualism in order to maintain the multicultural and multilingual identity of our continent. This—together with an ever increasing process of globalization—is a challenge for the field of Applied Linguistics. Consequently, the main theme of AILA 2008

Multilingualism: Challenges and Opportunities

is a very topical one, likely to attract distinguished colleagues as well as delegates from business, politics, and other areas.

It is felt that the Ruhr region with its multicultural roots is particularly suited to host a congress on topics associated with the conference theme.

We look forward to welcoming you in Essen, the administrative and economic heart of the Ruhr Region.
