Ending the International Slave Trade: A Bicentenary Inquiry

Mar 26, 2008 - Mar 29, 2008
College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina United States

Highlights

This conference will be convened in partnership with the International African American Museum to examine the impact the trade, and its legal end, had on the Lowcountry, the American South, and the wider Atlantic world. The purpose of the "Ending" is to indicate to participants that we need to think about the various ambiguities surrounding this moment: asking, for instance, how it was that the young republic could champion the notion of freedom for all and yet maintain the institution of slavery; what impact the abolition of the transatlantic trade had on the internal slave trade; and what lessons we might glean from the qualified success of this first international human rights campaign for contemporary efforts to eradicate slavery as it exists in the world today.
