A Decade of Ridge 2000: Synthesizing Observations of Ocean Spreading Center Processes
Oct 29,2010 - Oct 31,2010Hotel Monaco, Portland, Oregon, United States
-
Highlights
The Ridge 2000 Program is ready to capitalize on nearly a decade of multi-disciplinary experiments and observations at its Integrated Study Sites (ISS) and Time Critical Studies (TCS) sites by promoting in-depth discussions, data sharing, and the preparation of synthesis manuscripts addressing interdisciplinary topics. Data integration and synthesis are central to the successful completion of the Ridge 2000 Program, which aims to develop new conceptual and empirical models of ocean spreading center processes. Integration and synthesis will also generate ideas and questions that could form the basis for research programs after Ridge 2000 funding ends in 2012.
Participants in the 2010 Community Meeting are asked to select one or two Topical and ISS Working Groups (listed below). The groups will work together before, during, and following the meeting toward integrating and synthesizing knowledge on that topic or study site, and then to writing one or more synthesis manuscripts. Working Groups of roughly 10 persons each will be assembled by the Organizing Committee after the application deadline.
Thematic Working Groups
- Event and chronic hydrothermal plume models
- Mantle controls on melt extraction, and ridge morphology
- Seafloor tectonic and volcanic events and responses
- Spatial and temporal variation in chemistry and heat fluxes in hydrothermal systems
- Biogeochemical processes in deep-sea hydrothermal systems
- Biogeography, evolution, and adaptation to hydrothermal systems
- Crustal controls on magma reservoirs and ocean spreading center magmatism
- Emerging seafloor sensors and technologies for multidisciplinary oceanographic studies
- New paradigms for expanding education and outreach for oceanographic and earth sciences
