About 2500 years ago, Hippocrates said, 'Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.'
The International Life Sciences Institute in Europe has adopted the following definition of functional foods: 'If a food can be convincingly proven to have one or more functions of the body likely to benefit; there is sufficient nutrition effects to improve health or to reduce illness, such may be referred to as functional foods.'
Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals are designer foods and supplements with combined nutritional value and disease-prevention and medicinal benefits. These are usually natural products that can reduce or prevent chronic and acute diseases or promote good health. Estimates show that by 2013, the global functional food market is expected to reach at least US$90.5 billion. Factors driving this growth are the rising consumer interest in health and fitness as well as the trend toward disease prevention through balanced nutritional consumption.
Given the huge potential of the sector, the Functional Foods Summit scheduled from 22 – 23 September 2009 in Shanghai is designed as a platform for the latest trends and developments. The summit is an ideal venue to obtain relevant information on the functional foods industry through the various presentations from academic researchers and leading members in the industry.
This two-day conference will focus on the latest national and international food legislation and its implications for functional foods product development, regulatory development on health claims, and innovative ways of adding functional food ingredients to meet market demand and preference. The summit also tackles the current issues faced by food technologists and manufacturers, such as obesity and associated health problems, gut health, glycemic index and diet regimes. It will also provide participants and guests with the opportunity to meet key players in the industry.
